Hartalika Teej Significance and History

Hartalika comes from two Sanskrit words Harat (Abduction) and Aalika (Friend). The word “abduction” should not be taken literally, as it has a deeper meaning and purpose. According to Hindu mythology, the goddess Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva. However, his father did not approve, instead, he accepted Lord Vishnu’s offer. Hearing this, the goddess Paravati turned to her friend for help to hide in a secluded place in the jungle. and finally, Goddess Parvati was able to please Lord Shiva by performing severe austerities.
